Rocket Singh : Salesman of the Year

Dec 15, 2009

Had a bit of a longish weekend, being ill on a Friday does have it privileges...I get to do a little bit more of the nothing I usually intend.

So this weekend, the Sis and I decide to watch Rocket Singh : Salesman of the Year.

On the first note, I'm glad for a change that I don't see all the prancing and the dancing in an essentially commercial cinema...it could be so that this is low budget and that's why...but I think I would leave to the movie makers to have fully realized the futility of keeping one in this one.

There is very little doubt that this movie is all about Ranbir ( who is getting to be /already is- your regular charmer), But I also get this strange sense that slowly...he is getting ( if not very obviously so) intentionally typecast. He is talented indeed...but now the feeling is that we know his act.

That having said, I must hand it over to both Jaideep Sahni and Shimnit Amin for making a straight forward movie with out any fanfare...glossy or crassy bits either by way of dialogue or portrayal. What is likable is the fact that they play to reality, nothing is overdone..and everything is very relatable. We can see these characters around us...no one is either too good or too bad...they just are trying to do the best in their lives and living the circumstance.

Does honest to goodness theme work nowadays...especially in a scheming and conniving world we are made to believe we live in?
Maybe its just a reflection of what each one of us wishes for, that we need things simple and fair.
And that's why this one brings a smile to you face.

There are a few poignant moments where earthy psalms are spoken...but one that got me the most is the conversation or rather the life lesson that Harpreet's ( the protagonist's )ex boss : Mr. Puri( the antagonist) gives.

The movie can be perceived as mundane but only when compared to the plastic goop we get strewn with, but its good to see a realistic commercial cinema...ala mode ( Ranbir)!

This is a good one...6/10
