The Rules of The Game

Jan 26, 2010

I just saw an oldie : The Rules of the Game, a Jean Renoir film.
And this I must say-is one amazing movie... in lot of aspects.

At the first view, it's a very light movie but with strong portrayal of the bourgeois of that age ( probably even of now...). It highlights the artificiality and vacancy of emotions.

The story is about rich folks and a party that they attend and the amorous tensions between the leading characters. For a film made in 1939, it seems ahead of its time and I've read that it was a failure at first...or rather for a very long time. The French didn't take to well to it.

Cut back to today and my view on it...well its just so very thought provoking...and very well made cinematographically.
They called this one the film of films...I can probably understand why.
I don't think I can judge this one...It was a time I could not relate to...but yes...the emotional part...its around still...pretty much everywhere...

I recommend this as a definite watch...must watch even.
