this was awsome i think, Gore Vidal was interviewd by Mike Sager in last Esquire and in a note he wrote ( not ment actually ment for publication)...was this dialogue...which I is truly philosophical  ;)

 MS : You had a calling. You knew what you wanted to do from an early age-you needed to write. So many people today in the world suffer because they have no calling. They dont know where their place is, what they should be doing.
