The first time I saw a movie by Christopher Nolan, it was “Memento” and I quite enjoyed the “ backward movie “. It was an amazing thriller….an existential mystry.
Then came the Prestige, the movie was intriguing ( but probably not Nolans best)…again the theme of illusion and delusion…which was fascinating to me.
So, when I finally saw Batman Begins…I saw the pattern of grimness.
I was completely delighted by the new dimension to my hero on celluloid…finally, the version I guess some of us ardent Batman fans identify with.
Almost tru to reality always gets me.
And now we have a masterpiece in hero movies, …The Dark Knight…is one rocking ride. This is probably one of the best that I have seen in the genre.
The movie to me has delivered on every level : direction, writing, technical prowess…and of course the superlative cast.
The Joker undoubtedly stands out with his creepy poignance. The hair, the nightmarish makeup…the laugh…the scars on his cheeks and the “why so serious” bit. This Joker truly hates the world for the sake of hate itself. He is evil for the sake of evil .He loves chaos. The horror lies in what he represents…anarchy for the sake of anarchy.
This is a Joker we have so not known from the earlier movies.
Heath’s performance is electrifying from the start…and the nurse drag..is the icing!
The Joker is truly the soul of this movie.
Thru the movie I could not help but feel a lil sad…I don’t know who
else will truly justify this role going forward.
The rest of the cast was equally adept…I was genuinely surprised ( pleasantly so ) by Aron Eckhart’s Harvey Dent…Two-Face.
Maggie Gyllenhaal..was so much better than Katie Holmes. Michael Cain, Garry Oldman and Morgan Freeman…played their parts effortlessly.
Christian Bale…he is the best Batman ever. The ultimate masked vigilante.
His was the much restrained performance. There and almost not there.
As a viewer I was happy that justice was done to the story…the themes were well delved into and researched.
The movie had strong tragic tones…nothing is for ever. No triumph lasts for long.
This is a 9/10 for me.
